Swedish Schoolwear: Activities

Figure 1.--Swedish school children engage of course in all the nirmal school activities. We have very little specific information about school activities in Sweden at this time. We do have an interesting impage showing Swedish children participating in school yard games, presumably at recess during 1925. The children are at the Vist School.

Swedish school children engage of course in all the normal school activities. We have very little specific information about school activities in Sweden at this time. Here we have information on gym classes and reccesses.

Gym

Gym or Physical Education (PE) was part of the school program. We do not have any information about gym classes in Sweden. We do have several images which tells us about the program and the gym uniforms worn. We note a physical education lesson in Örebro (200 km from Stockholm) in 1916. Until after World war I we note that PE was often exercises and drill. This seems to be the case in Örebro. The children involved seem to be primary school children, but they sedem to have a very substantial school. The boys have not changed into a gym uniform, but wear their regulsr school clothes. Another photograph from Örebro after world War II shows the boys leaning about track events in 1954. They are wearing gym uniforms of shorft pants and an optional singlet. Another gym class shows boys wearing romper or bloomer pants.

Recess

We do have an charming image showing Swedish children participating in school yard games, presumably at recess. The image here looks like a staged one (notice the boy/girl) arrangement, but presumably it illustrates a game the children asctually played. I do not know precisely what the game was, but hopfully our Swedish readers will offer some insights on it. Notice the pinarores the girls are wearing and the sailor suits and kneepants the boys wear. Generally in America, recess meant free play. We wonder if in Sweden it was common for the teacher to organize the play.

Trips

We are not sure when school field trips first became popular in Sweden. We note schools taking thee trips in the early 20th century. We are not sre, however, wgat the first fiekld trips were. We suspect that they began as hikes out into te country to have a picnic. The ininitial trips were limited by the cost of transport abnd thus had to be mostly limited to place here the children could walk. The arrival of school busses greatly expanded the poptential for field trips.
