Individual Swiss School: Bäretswil School

Figure 1.--The Bäretswil School was located in the town of Bäretswill. There were two schools there. One with the same name as the towne, the other known as the Oberglatt School. The Bäretswil School class portrai was taken October 25, 1944. The children look to be about 11 years old--perhaps 6th graders. Again we see a variety of trouser and hosiery styles. Three boys in the front row wear long stockings, black or brown, with shorts and pullover sweaters.

The Bäretswil School was located in the town of Bäretswill. There were two schools there in 1944. One with the same name as the town, the other known as the Oberglatt School. We do not know if these schools still exist. Now there is a Kinfderkaten, primary, and secondary school at Bäretswil. We note various portraits at thec Bäretswil School. Bäretswil is a municipality in the district of Hinwil in Zürich Canton. We know virtually nothing about the town at this time. Perhaps our Swiss readers will be able o provide some information.

Bäretswil

The Bäretswil School was located in the town of Bäretswill. Bäretswil is a municipality in the district of Hinwil in Zürich Canton. We know virtually nothing about the town at this time. Perhaps our Swiss readers will be able o provide some information. The schools are substantial buildings. Thus we assume that Bäretswil was a small town and not a village.

Schools

There were two schools there in 1944. One with the same name as the town, the other known as the Oberglatt School. We do not know if these schools still exist. Now there is a Kinderkaten, primary, and secondary school at Bäretswil.

Classess

We note various class portraits at the Bäretswil School in 1944. This was the last few months of Workd War II. Switzerland managed to stay out of the War and by this time the threat of German invasion had past. The War, however, had an adverse impact on the Swiss economy. There is no indication that the War was raging oinly a few miles from the Swiss border. You would never guess it from the clothing and untroubled expressions on the children's faces.

4th year class

This is a group of what looks like fourth year students, probably about 10 years old. The photo was taken on October 26th, 1944 Since it is late October, chilly but not yet really cold, we see a variety of trousers for the boys. In the front row, for example, two of the boys wear baggy knickers and knee socks, one boy wears shorts with black knee socks and therefore has bare knees, and the most dressed up of the boys wears a neat short trousers suit with brown long stockings. The girls mostly wear pinafores with dresses or skirts and sweaters and all wear long stockings, either black or dark brown. The teacher is Herr Ernst Haartmann, wearing a white shirt with a suit jacket and sweater underneath. One of the boys with baggy knickers wears hiking boots with ankle woolen socks turned down over them, but nearly all the other children wear low-cult leather dress shoes. One of the girls also has ankle socks on top of her dark brown long stockings. Notice the boy in the back row on the right who wears elastic suspenders, probably with shorts and long stockings, but perhaps with knickers.

6th year class

The Bäretswil School class portrait was taken October 25, 1944 (figure 1). The children look to be about 12 years old, presumably 6th year students. Again we see a variety of trouser and hosiery styles. Three boys in the front row wear long stockings, black or brown, with shorts andpullover sweaters. Note that one of these boys wears additional woolen ankle socks for a sporty look--a style popular with boys who liked to hike in the mountains. The boy at the extreme left sitting down with his hands on his knees may also have additional socks (he wears boots), but they are a dark color, not rolled down over the boot tops, and therefore difficult to see clearly. Two boys have bare knees and are wearing knee socks. One boy has on the baggy knickers that were also quite popular, worn apparently with knee socks, although a few boys seem to have worn both long stockings and knickers at the same time. The girls also wear long stockings. Notice the girls' pinafores. The weather may have been a little chilly. It was October and the children all wear sweaters. Even so it does not look like a cold day. It is interesting that almost all the children wear long stockings. Long stockings were also popular in Germany, but not this populsar. The teacher was Herr Keller.
