U.S. 1910s School Clothes: Age Trends--Primary School Age Trends

1910s schoolwear
Figure 1.-- Here we see the 1915 graduating class at St. John's (or St. Joseph's) School. This would have been a Catholic school. There were many Catholic prmasries, but not very many Catholic high schools. So many Catholic children were unable to continue a Catholic education after 8th grade. Notice the girls' hairbows.

We still see city boys dressing up in suits for school, but somewhat less commonly than in the 1900s. This varied from school to school. We mostly see suits with lapel jackets, both single and double-breasted jackets. Norfolk suits were popular, often collar-buttoning styles. We still see a few collar buttoning jackets. Ties were still quite common. Not all boys wore suits to school. Boys also came to school in blouses/shirts, often with ties. Sweaters appear for he first time in substantial numbers. We see different styles. They were common at some schools, something that was not very common in the 1900s and earlier decades. Knee pants went out of style in the late-1900s decade. We still see some of younger boys wearing knee pants, but mostly we see boys wearing knickers. Like with knee pants, knickers were worn with long stockings, mostly black long stockings. We do not see short pants yet. This varied a little. Overalls suddenly became very common in rural schools, for boys, although older boys commonly wore long pants. There were still many small rural schools. They were generally schools with 8-year programs. Many city elementary (primary) schools were 6-year schools, although this varied somewhat by state. We mostly see boys wearing knickers in primary schools. Girls wore dresses. Blouses and shirts were not common. Hair bows were very popular, Notice the the huge bows the girls here in 1915 are wearing. The 1910s was the last decade that a majority of Americans still lived in rural areas. And many children still attended small rural schools. This was before mot states began consolidating these schools.

6 Years Old

Most American children began school at age 6 years if their birthdays began by September when school began. There were Kindergartens, but most children began school at age 6-years.

13 Years Old

Most America children ended their schooling at age 13-14 years in 8 year primaries. While the children began 8yth grade age 13 years, some were 14 years old when the school years finished. The rural schools might have older children, especially the boys. Secondary education was becoming more common, but most children still ended their education with an 8th grade graduation certificate. Even when the photographs are not dated, 1910s graduates are easily identified by the big hair bows the girls are waiting. They were especially common and large for graduation portraits ass we can see here in 1915 (figure 1). The boys mostly wear knicker suits with black long stockings. In graduation portraits, the girls often wear white dresses. The boys wear dark suits and neckties. The children did not always wear suits to school, but suits were still common and virtually mandatory for graduation portraits.
