Individual U.S. School: Unidentified Rural Elementary (Primary) School (United States, about 1905)

Figure 1.--This cabinet card portrait also has no accompnying information. It looks to us like a public primary school, but we are not sure just where, other than it is probably not a big city. We might guess the South, but we are not at all sure, but it is the most likely guess. The clothing strongly suggests the 1900s decade as does the mount. We woild guess it was taken about 1905, but not much later. Click on the image for an enlargement.

This cabinet card portrait also has no accompnying information. It looks to us like a public primary school, but we are not sure just where, other than it is definitely not a big city. If you look at the extreme right of the image you can see that the school was if not out in the country in a very small town. We might guess the South or the Midwest. We think the Midwest because we can see a storm cellar door in the photograph. Interestingly, the Wizzrd of Oz which begins with a tornado was published about the time this photograph was taken. We are not at all sure, but the Midwest seems the most likely. The clothing strongly suggests the 1900s decade as does the mount. We woild guess it was takenb about 1905, but not much alter. Unfortunately many of the new mounts after the turn of the century do not have the studio and city information that was standard in the 19th century. We generally choose schools for the individual school section when we have the name of the svhool or a denfinite date. This school image is especially interesting because of the diversity of the clothing. We see boys dressed in smart suits and ties with shoes. And along side or other boys just wrearing blouses and suspenders are barefoot. The number of boys with suspenders is notable. We have nice clear images of many major 1900s styles. The school itself can be see in the backround as well as anarrow sliver of ythe area weith a white poicvker fence (figure 1). It is well constructed building wiyth what looks like brick fire place. It is probably a one room school becuse there is only one teacher. There is over 30 children. They seem to be mosdtly younger children. We do not see any older students. We want to archive these many images in the 1900s Amnerican school garments section and needed a page for the school to base it on. Unfortunately we know nothing about the school other that which can be gleaned from the image.
