Individual U.S. School: Unidentified Class (United States, 1905)

school class 1905
Figure 1.-- Here we have a class portrai taken at the end of the school year in a city, but we have no idea what city. We do know thanks to the slate that the portrait was taken (May 1905). We dodn't have the grade, omly room number 6. There are quite a range of age groups here. We suspect that his was a small town, probably including rural areas. Often farm boys miss months on end and can take longr to finish chool. Tht may be why some older boys are in this class look to be bout 11 years old, tht would mean grade 6. That would meabn 6th grade. The boys that age are all sitting together and wear knee pants suits with black long stockings. The older boys wear long pants suits. So perhaps the room number meant 6th grade..

So perhaps the room number meant 6th grade. At the time primary school often meant an 8 year program. This was prticularly true of rural schools or smll town schools attended by rural children. Towns with secondary schools might have 6 year primaries, called elenentarty schools. We see the teacher. There is a man in the background, perhaps the principal. We don't see boys wearing overalls which is often a signal of rural students, but we do not begin to see many overalls until the late-1900s decade. Notice that only a few of the girls are weaing hairbows. They would become very common in the 1910s.
