Individual U.S. School: Unidentified Class (United States, about 1905)

school class 1905
Figure 1.-- All we know about this school is what we can deduce from the photograph. There is no accompnying information. We can tell by the clothing that the photograph was taken in the 1900s decade, probably about 1905, but not much later. We do not know where the school was located, but we suspect somewhere in the northeast. The children are very well dressed, better dressed than the average public school, but the mixed gender means that it was probably not a private school. The children seem to be about the same age which means that this was probably a class and not the entire school.

All we know about this school is what we can deduce from the photograph. There is no accompnying information. We can tell by the clothing that the photograph was taken in the 1900s decade, probably about 1905, but not much later. We do not know where the school was located, but we suspect somewhere in the northeast. The children are very well dressed, better dressed than the children at an average public school, perhaps an affluent cvommunity. The mixed gender class means that it was probably not a private school. The children seem to be about the same age which means that this was probably a class and not the entire school. This was a little surprising given that the school in the background soes not seem to be a large school. It is not a small one or two room school, but does not look like a school with many classes this size. The girls wear dresses. They have chosen white or light-colors. We see very few hair bows and only one prominent one. This would not be the case in the 1910s. The boys mostly wear standard suits. Some boys wear blouses and several wear sailor suits. They are mostly wearing knee pants which helps to date the image because about 1908, American boys began wearing knickers. All the boys we can see are wearing long stockings with the knee pants. They are all dark long stockings. They look to be mostly, but not all, black long stockings. The children look to be about 10-11 years old which would mean about the 5th grade. A reader werites, "I wonder if the building is part of a church as it does not resemble what I would expect a school to look like. It just seems that the children are more dressed up than a public school. And it does not look like a non-religious private school." We certainly have not seen many schools like it, but also not church like. If you look at the windows it seems rather like a school. The decorative trim was a popular style at the time.
