Individual U.S. School: Unidentified Primary School (late 1910s)

Figure 1.-- Here we see some of the girls, many with their baby dolls. Notice the boy with the dark colored blouse. The boy it is wearing it unbuttoned which was not very common.

We have a matted formatted school portrait. It looks to be a 1st grade clss. Unfortunately we do not know the name of this school or even when it was taken. We have several details from the portrait showing the children's outfits in detail. We at first thought this was from the early 1920s, but perhaps the late-1910s is more likely. Note the footwear. This looks more like the 1910s. The children are posing in front of their elementary (primary) school. The girls are holding their dolls. This must have been a special day for the girls to bring their dolls to school. Two of the boys wear sailor suits. One boy has a large white collar and floppy bow, Another boy wears a dark blouse with a wide collar. Another boy wears what looks like a home knitted sweater.

The School

We have a matted formatted school portrait. Unfortunately we know nothing about the school or the name and do not have a scan of the entire photograph. The school looks to be a a public (state) primary school. It was a substantial brock building.

The Class

The group looks to be a 1st grade class. This would mean that the children are 6-7 years old. For some reason there are more girls than boys.

Chronology

Unfortunately we do not when the portrait taken. We at first thought this was from the early 1920s, but perhaps the late-1910s is more likely. Note the footwear. This looks more like the 1910s.

Special Day

The children are posing in front of their elementary (primary) school. The girls are holding their dolls. This must have been a special day for the girls to bring their dolls to school. Noitice the boys have not brought any of their toys. This seems to be a special day only for the girls.

Clothing

We have several details from the portrait showing the children's outfits in detail. Two of the boys wear sailor suits. One boy has a large white collar and floppy bow, Another boy wears a dark blouse with a wide collar. We are not sure about the color. The boy it is wearing it unbuttoned which was not very common. Another boy wears what looks like a home knitted sweater. The girls are all wearing dresses with both knee socks and long stockings. Onecgirl has a huge hair bow.
