Japanese School Uniform Caps: Floppy Caps

Figure 1.--Japanese boys varied as to how they wore this brim. Many boys wore the brim down at the front looking rather like the bill of an English shool cap, and up in back. Some boys wore the bill down all around. We have not noted boys wearing up in front and down at the back. I don't know if there was a school rule about this.

I'm not sure what the proper name for these caps were. The cap had a soft crown with a circular bill. Japanese boys varied as to how they wore this brim. Many boys wore the brim down at the front looking rather like the bill of an English shool cap, and up in back. Some boys wore the bill down all around. We have not noted boys wearing up in front and down at the back. I don't know if there was a school rule about this. Most of the caps we have noted are blue. Some schools had yellow versions for saftey reasons. These caps campe with chin straps. I'm not sure why the chin straps were needed, I assume to keep the caps from blowing off in the wind. Some schools insisted the boys wear their caps with the chin straps. Not all schools had caps, but we have noted these caps being worn at several schools. Even some schools without uniforms had the children wear these caps.
