Japanese School Uniform Caps: Berets

Figure 1.--The white shorts and shirts are standard P.E. clothes worn at primary and middle schools in Japan. The berets and scarfs suggest that the children are dressed for a school festival--perhaps "sports day," a national holiday in October.

Berets are not commonly worn headwear at Japanese schools. We have noted berets being worn, but except for special occassions, mostly by girls and pre-school boys. They are also worn as part of PE-uniforms for school atletic performances. Presumably sonmething like sports day (figure 1). As far as I can tell they were mostly worn for these special occassioins. Presumably the school had other headwear for everyday usage. We have also noted school choir groups wearing berets. I am not sure what the Japanese term for beret is.
