Scottish School Uniform Kilts: The Kilt and Accompanying Garments

Figure 1.--Boys usually wore tweed jackets with ther kilts rather than the school blazer. Theu also wore white shirts and plain or plaid ties.

Several garments were worn with the kilt. Most Scottish private schools have boys buy both blazers and tweed jackets. The blazers are generally worn with short or long pants. Occasionally blazers are worn with kilts, but it is not very common. One school in the 1980s had boys wear their kilt with striking red blazers instead of tweed jackets. More commonly Scottish boys wear their kilts with tweed jackets. Most schools allow the boys to select the tweed of their choice. One outfitter in Edinburgh carries a variety of stock Harris tweeds, including Oatmeal Marl, Blue Marl, Oatmeal Herring Bone, Green Herring Bone, and Brown Herring Bone. None of the schools requires a uniform tartan. Rather the boys are allowed to choose a clan tartan their family is associated with. Boys from England or foreign countries can choose ant tartan they may prefer. A variety of accesories are worn with the kilt. Most schools do not insist on the many accessories. Most boys do wear sporans and kilr pins. There are both day sporans and night sporans for dress wear. At school the boys choose the simple leather day sporans. Special knee-length kilt hose are worn with the kilt. Other kilt accesories are generally not worn at schools. Boys do not normally wear caps with their kilts. The two major styles are Balmorals and Glengarry. The sash worn over the shoulder is also not worn. Other accessories include Sgiandubh, Ghillie Brogues, Kilt Belts, and Clan Crest Badges.

Headwear

We believed school kilts were once commonly worn with traditional school caps. Schools by the 1980s, however, had mostly dropped caps so most boys wore kilts without headwear.

Blazers

Most Scottish private schools have boys buy both blazers and tweed jackets. The blazers are generally worn with short or long pants. Occasionally blazers are worn with kilts, but it is not very common. Onr school in the 1980s had boys wear their kilt with striking red blazers instead of tweed jackets. We notice blazers bein worn with kilts at a few schools, but this was not very common.

Tweed Jackets

More commonly Scottish boys wear their kilts with short cut tweed jackets. These were especially cut jackets. They are cut shorter thab sports jackets, presumably to better show off the kikt. Boys could select the colors they preferred or went best with the tartan chosen for their kilt.

Shirts

As the kilt is considered a dress uniform, it was always worn with white shirts.

Ties

Boys commonly did not wear the school ties with their kilt. Commonly they wore plain colored ties or tartan ties.

The Kilt

The kilt of course is widely associated with Scotland, so most private schools in Scotland have kilts as part of the school uniform. The schools required a proper kilt which is an expensive wool garment. The kilt is not just a simple tartan skirt made in different fabrics as it is commonly called in America. None of the schools requires a uniform tartan. Rather the boys are allowed to choose a clan tartan which their family is associated with. There are quite a number of clan and other tartans, so the boys offer quite a colorful scene in all the different brightly colored tartans. Boys from England or foreign countries can choose any tartan they may prefer. The kilt is fitted to hang at knee level.

Accessories

A variety of accesories are worn with the kilt. Most schools do not insist on the many accessories. Most boys do wear sporans and kilr pins. There are both day sporans and night sporans for dress wear. At school the boys choose the simple leather day sporans. Special knee-length kilt hose are worn with the kilt. Other kilt accesories are generally not worn at schools. Boys do not normally wear caps with their kilts. The two major styles are Balmorals and Glen?????. The sash worn over the shoulder is also not worn. Other accessories include Sgiandubh, Ghillie Brogues, Kilt Belts, and Clan Crest Badges.
