French Rompers: Chronology--Classic Perriod (The 1950s)

Figure 1.--This French boy was photographed fishing with his big brother in 1952. He looks to be about 4 years old and wears a bib-front romper suit. His older brother wears ordinary short pants.

We notice rompers being widely worn by French pre-school boys in the early 1950s. It was the popular style for boys before they began school. Some boys may have worn rompers after beginning school, but not to school. For the most part, however, it was a pre-school style. The one we have seem mostly to be the light blue rompers. The styles included both the classic one-piece style with the bow at the back. We also notice the rompers with bib fronts. They were worn for both special occassions and for play. The boy here going fishing with his family wears a play bib-front romper (figure 1). It looks to be the popular light-blue color. We also notice dressy styles. A good example is boy about 3 years old in an Easter outfit. Most of the images we have noted are from the early 1950s. We notice far fewer images from the late 1950s which we believe reflects the declining popularity of rompers in France. We believe that another trend is that younger boys by the later part of the decade were wearing them. We also notice boys in Belgium wearing what look like identical rompers during the 1950s. Belgian fashions especially in Walonnia wee strong;y influenced by French styles.
