Indiana Family (1976)

Figure 1.--Here we see an Indiana family wearing many popular styles of the 1970s. They stand in front of the family station wagon and camper in 1976. Notice the style of short shorts worn with knee length tube socks with colored stripes around the top. Boys of different ages wear them. One of the boys wears plain white tube socks with a tank top with the word Brazil on it (an Indiana town). The red and white tube socks are influenced by loyalty to the Indiana University basket ball team (the school colors). Notice the blue jean cutoffs worn by a high school boy. Also notice the flared jeans abd girl's bib-front shorts. Notice only the boys wear the tube socks.

Family

Unfortunately we know nothing about the family. They stand in front of the family station wagon and camper. We suspect they may have been a farm family or perhaps a Catholic family, possibly a working-class family. Unionized workers could wtill make a good living in the 1970s.

Chronology

We do know that the snapshot was taken in 1976.

Location

I suspect the family is from Brazil. This is a town in a rural area of southern Indiana, near Terre Haute and not too far from Bloomington, the main campus of Indiana University. The high school boy is probably a student at the Brazil High School.

Clothing

The children wear many popular styles of the 1970s. The boys wear "T"-shirts and tank tops (Singlets). Notice the abbreviated T-shirt one of the boys is wearing. A T-shirt that exposes part of the upper body above the waist line of the shorts. See the teenager on the extreme left with the red shorts and red and white tube socks. This style was popular in the 1970s. It was especually popular with football players. Also notice the style of short shorts. Shorts became very popular in the 1970s. We see boys of all ages wearing them. We suspect that in the 1960s far fewer Indiana boys,m esecually the older boys would have worn shorts. There were several different casual and athletic styles, mos cut quit short. They were commonly worn with knee length tube socks with colored stripes around the top. Another observation here is that the children are obviously allowed to choose their own clothes. There is no age grading by parents. Notice that the youngest boy wears flared jeans while most of his older brothers wear shorts.
