Long Stockings: Canada--Gender

Figure 1.--Both boys and girls wore long stockings. After World War I long stockings became more commonly worn by girls. Some younger German boys, however, continued to wear long stockings into the 1950s, even with short pants. These girls, probably in the 1940s, all wear long stockings. Interestingly they also wear knickers.

Both boys and girls wore long stockings. Clothing catalogs advertise the same long stockings for both boys and girls. It is impossible to determine who wore then more commonly. Black long stockings were the most common in the late 19th cebntury century. A good example is the Armstrong children. Children also wore white long stockings. Both boys and girls wore them, but white was more common for girls. Through the early 20th century both boys and girls continued to commonly wear them. After World War I, it seems to have become more common for girls to wear them. Younger boys, however, continued to wear them even with short pants. This continued into the 1950s. They were worn by boys both in cold weather and for formal occasions. Aftr World War I, children more commonly wore long stockings in brown shades. White and black were still worn, but more for formal occassions. Long stockings continued to be worn after world War II, but we believe more commonly by girls rather thsan boys.
