Ringlet Curl Characteristics: Tightness--Loose Curls

Figure 1.--This American boy's ringlets are done in loose curls. The image is undated, but we would guess about 1905. Notice the above the knee knickers ailor suit done in a rather louch check material.

Other boys have hair where the ringlets are loosely curled. Their hair in some cases almost does not look like they are wearing ringlets curls. The hair looks like it is curled, only not in tight individual ringlets. HBC is unsure at this time as to whether this is a fashion and that the hair was curled for this effect or whether the hair might have been curled a day or so earlier and had lost their tight ringlet look. As some of the images of boys with these styles were formal potraits taken at a studio, you would have thought that their hair would have been done especially for the portrait. This suggests that it may have been the style and not ringlets that had been worn a while and lost their tight look. A HBC reader agrees, "I think it is the style. Rag curls would have looked differently."

Looseness

Bangs

Like tight ringlet curls, the looselky done curls could be done with front bangs (fringes). This was very common with tight ringlets. We have not yet noticed the loose curls with bangs, but this may be because we have relatively few images.

Part

Another variation with these loosely done curls is the part. The hair could be parted in the center or at the sides Notice the boy here with the center part. We also notice boys with side prts. The side parts of course meant that the length of the hair on each side varied. We do not yet know if the keft ir ight parts were the most common.

Country

we have noted these loose ringlet haor styles in both the United Stayes in Europe. As far as we can tell the tight ringlets were more common in America and the loose curls in Europe. Our information in Europe, however, is still limited.
