Figure 1.--This cabinet card portrait shows an unidentified boy with righles. Notice that the ringlts are not tightly formd ringlets. This was one of the different styles of ringlets. The photographic record, however, suggests tht tightly formed ringlets was the most common style for American boys having their hair done in ringlets. The portrait is undated, but looks like the 1870s to us. Notice the lack of any Fauntleroy cloting items. Rge studio is Wynne S. Smith in what looks like Painsville, Ohio.

U.S. Boys' 1870s Ringlet Curl Chronology: Styles

We see boys wearing several different dtyles of ringlet curls in the 1870s. One notable trend is the bangs commonly associated with ringlets by the 1880s o not seem as common in the 1870s. Many boys have their swept back in various ways exposing their foreheads. The boy on the previou page is a good example. Another good example is Frank Tuche. This is a reflection of the fact that bangs were not yet a major style for boys. And without bangs, it was difficult to hide a center part that was generally associated with girls' hair styles. Also we see many boys with ringlets that were mot tightly curled. Long ringlets wee the most common, but we we notice some rather short ringlets. We also an unidetified Philadelphia boy. He has his hair done at the front like a short cut, but ringlets in the back. We notice Andrew Richardson with ringlets not quite touching his sholders in 1875.
