Figure 1.-- This boy presumably named Walter had a portrair taken wearing a Fauntleroy kilt suit. An inscription on the back reads, "Mama from Walter 3rd birthday, October 9th 1892". Walter wears a dark, solid colored kilt suit with a fancy Fauntleroy blouse and white floppy bow. The portrait was taken in fashionable Philadelphia at the Bucher studio.

American Fauntleroy Kilt Suits: Chronology

The chronology of Fauntleroy kilt suits is more narrow than the overall kilt suit chronology in that the Fauntleroy style did not appear than the mid-80s. The kilt suit was worn from the 1870s to the very early-1900s. The Fauntleroy Craze exploded upon American boys with the publication of Mrs. Burnett's story (1885). Thus we only begin to see these Fauntleroy kilt suits beginning about 1886. The chronology of the Fauntleroy kilt suit seems very similar to that of the Fauntleroy suit itself. This helps us to date the many undated portraits. They seem to be most common from about 1886-95, but this needs to be confirmed. We note Pennsylvania boy, Freddie Miller Shelton wearinf a velvet Fauntleroy kilt suit, probably abvout 1890. The mount pinking dates the portrait to 1888-95. Freddie was 5 1/2 years old. We have found most of our exmples from the 1890s. We still see these Fauntleroy kilt suits in very early 1900s catalogs, but with slightly younger age conventions. They are not seen to any extent after 1905.

The 1870s

The chronology of Fauntleroy kilt suits is more narrow than the overall kilt suit chronology in that the Fauntleroy style did not appear than the mid-80s. Thus there are noexamples from the 1870s.

The 1880s

The kilt suit was worn from the 1870s to the very early-1900s. The Fauntleroy Craze exploded upon American boys with the publication of Mrs. Burnett's story (1885). Thus we only begin to see these Fauntleroy kilt suits beginning about 1886. The chronology of the Fauntleroy kilt suit seems very similar to that of the Fauntleroy suit itself. This helps us to date the many undated portraits. They seem to be most common from about 1886-95, but this needs to be confirmed. We have found several examples from the mid- and late-80s.

The 1890s

We have found most of our exmples of Fayntleroy kilt suits from the 1890s. We see cut-away jackets and fancy Fauntleroy blouses. We have found both pleated and unpleated kilt-skirts. We note a Pennsylvania boy, Freddie Miller Shelton wearinf a velvet Fauntleroy kilt suit, probably about 1890. The mount pinking dates the portrait to 1888-95. Freddie was 5 1/2 years old. He wears a classic cut -away jackets with a matching kilt skirt. Notice the buttons in the kilt-skirt. Another good example are unidentified Kansas brothers in 1895, again with dark kilt skirts. The boys look to be 3-4 years old. This seems more common than the plaid kilt-sirts we sometimes see.

The 1900s

We still see these Fauntleroy kilt suits in very early 1900s catalogs, but with slightly younger age conventions. And we have found a few examples in the photographic rcord. They are not seen to any extent after 1905.
