Unidentified Pennsylvania Boy: Fauntleroy Kilt Suit (about 1880)

Figure 1.--Here we see an American boy wearing a Fauntleoy-styled kilt suit. It included a cut-away jacket and Fauntleroy blouse. The image is not dated, but we suspect was taken in the early-1880s before the Fauntleroy craze was well established. Notice the ribbon bow neckwear rather than the floppy bow which would becomne so associated witgh the Fauntleroy look. The studio was L.P. Greenlund & Co. in Warren, Pennsylvania. A reader has provided an assessment of this boy's Fauntleroy kilt suit outfit.

A reader has provided an assessment of this boy's Fauntleroy kilt suit outfit. A reader writes, " First the jacket appears a bit small on the child. I would also guess his age at about 5 or 6. The lace collar and cuffs appear to be the kind that attaches to the blouse and do not come with it. The blouse seems to be the style with a draw string which probably means the skirt is buttoned or attached to either a bodice or a waist. The blouse appears to be back buttoning but the image may be too blurred to tell. The skirt has dark patch design near the hem and patches on the cuffs of the jacket which are almost unnoticeable with the cuff design. I would guess the outfit was sewn by a family member and is not store bought. The boy wears high top shoes or boots with long black stockings." We think this is aood description of the outfit. The only comment we have is that these cut away jackets were designed to be small so as to show off the fancy blouse to best advantage. The dark patches are velvet features, something we see on many kilt suits.
