American Eton Suits: Chronology--The 1930s

Figure 1.--This unidentified American boy wears a juvenile Eton suit. The portrait is undated, but was pribably taken about 1930. Note the breast pocket and handkerchief. He wears a classic Eton collar and knee socks with the suit. The socjks look to be grey rather than matching dark socks. Note the necktie. That was not very common. He looks to be about 5-6 years old.

HBC has some information about the Eton suits worn in the 1930s. We note quite a few examples in the photographic records. We do not yet, however, have a good fix yet on just how prevlent these suits were. Are initial assessment is that they were fairly common, especially among the better off segment of the population. Of course the 1930s was the Depression decade. We still see detachable Eton collars, although they were no longer a major item as they had been earlier. We do see mostly see large collars, but they were not all detachable collars. The junior Eton suits were always done with flat (plain) material--no patterned fabric. The were mostly black/navy blue or grey. Eton collars appear to have been the most common, but we begin to see some Peter Pan collars as well. We believe that boys as old as 9-10 years wore Eton suits in the 1930s. A good example is an Ohio boy wearing a classic Eton collar with an Eton suit, we believe in the 1930s, but it could be the 40s. . Notice that he is wearing a stiff, large detachable collar. He is wearing his suit with dark ankle socks. As was common with these Eton suits it is a short pants suit. We see the Tucker boys in 1937 with classic detachable Eton collars and lapelless jacket. For a summer touch, mother had substituted white short pants for the regular suit shortsAlmost all of the Eton collars suits we have noted in the photogrphic record are short pants suits. And we still see them being worn with knee socks such as the boy here (figure 1). Although we see some boys wearing ankle socks.

Prevalence

HBC has some information about the Eton suits worn in the 1930s. We note quite a few examples in the photographic records. We do not yet, however, have a good fix yet on just how prevlent these suits were. Are initial assessment is that they were fairly common, especially among the better off segment of the population. Of course the 1930s was the Depression decade.

Collars

We still see detachable Eton collars, although they were no longer a major item as they had been earlier. We do see mostly see large collars, but they were not all detachable collars. The pointed Eton collars appear to have been the most common, but we begin to see some rounded Peter Pan collars as well. A good example is an Ohio boy wearing a classic Eton collar with an Eton suit, we believe in the 1930s, but it could be the 40s. Notice that he is wearing a stiff, large detachable collar. Not all the the large collars were detachable collars. We note the Starrett boys in 1935. They have large Eton collars which look to us like they are attached blouses. It is, however, a little difficult to tell. The boys are twins who look to be about 8-9 years old.

Flat Fabric

The junior Eton suits were always done with flat (plain) material--no patterned fabric. The were mostly black/navy blue or grey.

Ages

We believe that boys as old as 9-10 years wore Eton suits in the 1930s. Thatv see to be the upper range that we observe in the photographic record.

Pants

Almost all of these suits were done with short pants. This is what we see in the photographic record. We do not see knickers or long pants. We see the Tucker boys in 1937 with classic detachable Eton collars and lapel-less jacket. For a summer touch, mother had substituted white short pants for the regular suit shorts.

Hosiery

And we still see them being worn with knee socks such as the boy here (figure 1). Although we see some boys wearing ankle socks. The Ohio boy is wearing his suit with dark ankle socks. Ankle socks became much mre c ommon in the 1940s.
