Little Lord Fauntleroy Suits: Precursors (late-1870s/early-1880s)

Fauntleroy curls
Figure 1.--This unientified Chicago boy boy wears a cut away jacket with a touch of Norfolk styling. He looks to be about 4 years old. Notice a relatively large scalloped collar. This suggests to us that the portrait was taken about 1880. His hair is done in bangs and ringlet curls. His outfit can be seen as a precursor of the Fauntleroy Craze to come. Notice that the shirt waist or blouse does not have front buttons. All we know about him is waht the studio wrote on the back, "Mrs Smith 542 Elston Lane18-22 son". The studio was Loveday in Chicago.

Mrs. Burnett published her Fauntleroy story, a first serailized in newspapers (1885), we begin to see some pre-cursors earlier. Boys suits were very plain with small almost hidden collars in the 1860s. This began to change in the 1870s. We see somewhat larger collars, but not huge collars. Boys suits were still plain, although some suits for younger boys could have heavy embroidery, even in some cases continued on to the pants. By the early 1880s we begin to see larger collars and more attention to neckwear, although neckwear continued to be alternative. This appears to have been a style originating in France. Mrs. Burnett lived in Paris for a time and the boys wear there influenced the fashions she chose for her son Vivian and the illustratiions for her book when it was first published as a serialized form in St. Nicholas Magazine (1885). Here we see what looks to be a precursor of the Fauntleroy style about 1880 (figure 1).We see Norfolk styling becoming more important. Our assessment here is complicated by fact that so few old portraits are actually dated. We are forced to estimate the dates, but of course that introduces an element doubt. We can usually accurately assess dates atb least to the decade based on the portraits that are dated, but estimate beyond that is not possible.
