Fauntleroy Garments: Individual English Outfit

Figure 1.--This English portrait is undated, but we would estimate about 1900. Note the pantalettes and rather modern looking shoes.

This English portrait is undated. We would estimate about 1900, althouh this is not an estimate we are comfortable with. This boy does not wear a classic Faunteleroy suit, in fact we are at a bit of a loss as to just how to describe it. He has two bows. One looks like a small stock worn with his collar. The other looks rather like a sailor scarfe which looks like it may be worn on a chain or necklace. It has a pinned on lace collar. Note the pantalettes and rather modern looking shoes. Ringlet curls were not as common in other countries as they were in America. This boy wears short pants and three-quarter length socks.

Chronology

This English portrait is undated. We would estimate about 1900, althouh this is not an estimate we are comfortable with. We have many more American image in HBC than English images and thus we fee less comfortable about dating English images. An American boy almost always wore long stockings in formal portraits until the turn of the 20th century. We think this was not necesarily the case in England. The boys's upper bow, for example, looks rather like a 1870s style.

Locaton

The image was taken in Folkstone, England. Folkstone is a popular seaside resort, explaining the seaside background of the portrait. He is located on the English Channel near Dover. There is also a pituresque town and fishing harbour. It is close to the terminus of the ultra-modern Channel Tunnel.

Identity

The boy is unidentified. His long hair suggests that he is not from a poor family. We wonder if his hair would not have been better done if he was not from a more affluent family. The fact that he wears a rather non-descript jacket with a pinned-on lace collar rather than a classic Fauntleroy suit. This suggests to HBC that the boy probably came from a modest middle-class family.

Age

The boy looks to be 5-6 years old.

Outfits

This boy does not wear a classic Faunteleroy suit, in fact we are at a bit of a loss as to just how to describe it. The jacket is long sleeved and front bittoning. I do not note any lapels or collars. The jacket appears to have a speckled effect. I'm not positive that the shorts match the jacket.

Bows

The boy has two bows. One looks like a small stock worn with his collar. The other looks rather like a sailor scarfe which looks like it may be worn on a chain or necklace.

Lace Collar

The boy wears a pinned on lace collar on his jacket. There is mattching cuff trim.

Pantalettes

Note the pantalettes, at least I assume these are pantalettes and not trim on the shorts. This is one reason I am a little unsure about the 1900 estimate. They suggest an earlier date.

Hosiery

This boy wears short pants and three-quarter length socks.

Footwear

The shoes look rather modern. Shoe styles, however, is not a topic HBC has preferred. Many american boys wore button shoes with Fauntleroy suits. They also look somewhat out of place with his outit as you would expect strap shoes.

Hair Style

Ringlet curls were not as common in other countries as they were in America.

Reader Comments

A HBC reader asks, "I may be mistaken, but I believe the top has a sailor collar. What do you think?" HBC has noted some boys wearing a pin-on lace or ruffled collar with a sailor suit. In this case, we see no indication that the boy is waring a sailor suit. There is a front "V" with a scarfe, bit it does not seem to be a sailor collar and there is no dicky. Rather it looks to be some sort of necklace or pendant.
