We still see Fauntleroy suits after the turn-of-the- 20th century in the 1900s, but they were declining. It was the end of the Fauntleroy craze. We do not see nearly as many Fauntleroy suits as in the 1890s, but they were not rare. In the early part of the decade we still see classic Fauntleroy suits with the small velvet cut-away jackets and fancy Fauntleroy blouses. We do not see lace collars as commonly, but large ruffled collars were often worn. American Fauntleroy suits were almost always worn with knee pants and long stockings. In Britain, bloomer knickers were more common. Such outfits, however, had fallen considerably in popularity by the end of the decade. At least the classic versions of the Fauntleroy suit were less common. School portraits in particular are a good indicator of popular fashion. We still see boys with Fauntleroy items, but rarely the classic cut-away jacket suits, especially after the early years of th 1900s decade. This is why we date the Fauntleroy craze to 1885-1905. We do continue to see Fauntleroy blouses, especially the less elaborate styles. It is quite common to see some of the younger boys wearing Fauntleroy suits. And many of the older boys wearing Fauntleroy-influence fashions. We gradually begin seeing them being worn by increasingly younger boys as the decade progressed. The photographic record shows a substantial decline in the popularity of the style. We no longer at the end of the decade see Fauntleroy suits very commonly in school portraits. It is difficult to know just why Fauntleroy suits declined in popularity after the early years of the decade. We suspect that one factor was that it was in the 1900s that boys who wore Fauntleroy suits in the 1880s began to become fathers themselves. And they may not have had pleasant memories about how they were dressed. While mothers still were largely responsible for younger boys, we suspect that a number of new fathers intervened to ensure that theur sons would not wear the Fauntleroy suits that they had to wear as boys.
