American Fauntleroy Blouses: Age Trends--7 Year Olds

Fauntleroy blouses
Figure 1.--This unidentified boy and girl, presumably siblings, are dressed in their best clothes for a portrait. The cabinet card portrait was taken by W. H. Stalee, 1107 F. St., Washington, D.C. It is undated, but the clothes and mount suggest it was taken about the turn-of-the 20th century. The boy wearing a fancy Fauntleroy blouse looks to be about 7 years old.

We see many 7-year olds wearing Fauntleroy blouses. We see boys wearing them with and without a suit jacket. The jacket varied. We see fewer boys at age 7 weaking these blouses with the classic cut-away Fauntleroy blouses. More common was more mature jackets. A good example is Raymomd J.D. Webb who wears his Fauntleroy blouse with a double-breasted suit about 1900. This is shown by the photographic record. Quite a few images of 7-year olds wearing Fauntleroy blouses are archived on HBC. Most boys at age 7 had already begun school and were beginning to want more mature atire, but mothers congtinued to commonly outfit them in Fauntleroy blouses. We even see a few at school with Fauntleroy , but rarely after age 7. The Fauntleroy blouse was for many 7-year olds the standard dress up garment. Boys commonly wore the blouses with floppy bows. Almost all boys wore them with knee pants and black long stockings. Age 7 was a very common age for wearing Fauntleroy blouses, but they begin to fall off slightly after age 7, especially after the turn-of-the century.
