American Fauntleroy Blouses: Chronology--The 1890s

Fauntleroy blouses 1890s
Figure 1.--iThis cabinet card portrait was taken in 1897 and shows to brothers, Arthur (10 years old) and Charles (8 years old) wearing white Fauntleroy blouses with knee pants and black long stockings. They do not seem to have floppy bows. The image does not show much detailsin the all-white blouses, but is useful because it does give the age of the boys and the date the portrait was taken. Also notice their soft chat, we see quite a gew of those in the 1890s. The studio was J.C. Nolte in Lewistown, Pennsylvania. Also notice the white hicker furniture, a common feature of turn-of-the century studop portraits.

Fauntleroy blouses were most common and most elaborate in the 1890s. Mrs. Burnett published her book (1885). The Funtleroy blouse was anre item when it was first introduced (1885). It took a few years for manufcturers to ramp up the production of ready made Fauntleroy blouses. It had become an established style by the 1880s when many boys were wearing them and many companies were involved in manufacturing and selling them. The Fauntleroy style was by the 1890s well established and the popularity continued throughout the decade. The photographic shows a substantial number of American boys wearing Fauntleroy blouses. Some were even for younger boys were relatively modest such as the one worn by New York boy Freddiec Deveraux in 1892. Others were had huge collars that seem to almot engulf small boys. Fauntleroy blouses were worn by school age boys throughout the 1890s. We note Illionos boy Willie Schriner in 1896. The Pennsylvania boys here in 1897 are a good example (figure 1). We not only see the enormously elaboate blouses designed to be worn by younger boys with Fauntleroy suits, but we see fancy blouses for older boys that were worn without the classic cut-away Fauntleroy suit jacket. They tended to be somewhat less extremne than the blouses for younger boys made to be worn with the classic suits. We seen these bouses worn to the early teens, at least 13 year olds. The chronplogy of these two types were slighly different, but very similar. The blouses on the previou page are a good example. They might be worn with a regular jacket, but older boys did not usually wear the classic Fauntleroy jackets.

Peak Decade

Fauntleroy blouses were most common and most elaborate in the 1890s. Mrs. Burnett published her book (1885). The Funtleroy blouse was anre item when it was first introduced (1885). It took a few years for manufcturers to ramp up the production of ready made Fauntleroy blouses. It had become an established style by the 1880s when many boys were wearing them and many companies were involved in manufacturing and selling them. The Fauntleroy style was by the 1890s well established and the popularity continued throughout the decade.

Prevalence

The photographic record shows a substantial number of American boys wearing Fauntleroy blouses. This was especially the case of boys from well-established middle class families.

Styling

Some were even for younger boys were relatively modest such as the one worn by New York boy Freddiec Deveraux in 1892. Others were had huge collars that seem to almot engulf small boys.

Garments

Fauntleroy blouses might be worn with the classic cut-away velvet jackets. We see this with Freddie Deveraux's outfit. Older boys also wore Fauntleroy suits, but often not with the classic cut-away jacket. Boys during the summer often just wore the blouses wthout the jacket. Another good example is the Nebraska boys on the previous page.

Age

Fauntleroy blouses were worn by pre-school and school age boys throughout the 1890s. Little boys in the 1890s still wore dresses and other skirted garments. This practice was declining, but still persisted. The age of breeching varied from family to family, but breeching was commonly about 3-4 years of age. Thids was slightly younger than in prvious years. We think the Fauntlerpoy Craze was part of the reason for this. Mother were so anxious to outfit their sons in Fauntleroy suits that they that they seem to have brrech them a little before than was common earler in the century. We begin to see boys wearing Funtleroy suits from a very early age. We see a few boys who look ti vbe about 2 years old but it is about age 3 years that we begin to see really large numbers. We note 7 years old Illinios boy Willie Schriner in 1896. The Pennsylvania boys here in 1897 are 8-10 years old and abither good example of age trends (figure 1). The chronology of these two types were slighly different, but very similar.
