American Little Lord Fauntleroy Suits: Garments--Pants

Figure 1.--American Fauntleroy suits were almost always done with knee pants. We often see bloomer knickers in Europe, but this was not common in America.

Knee pants were usually used for American Fauntleroy suits. The cut was fairly standard. Almost all American Fauntleroy suits, except for kilt suits, were worn with kneepants. Knee pants by the 1880s were becoming increasingly standard for American biys, especially by the late-1880s. Almost all younger boys wore them. Thus it is only natural that Fauntlroy suits would be done with knee pants. We see many European boys wearing Fauntleroy suits with bloomer knickers. This was not unknown in America, but was not very common. We do not entirely understand the dichotomy between America abd Britain. Unlike England. knicker Fauntleroy suits were rare. I think this basically was a reflection of the relative popularity of knee pants and knickers in America and Britain, at least for fancy outfits. The American Fautleroy suit knee pants were generally knee length or just below knee length. Early knee pants were often cut at calf-level or even longer. By the 1880s when the Fauntlerpy suit appeared the shorter knee-length pants were becoming more standard. The knee pants matched the jacket. Some were plain. Some had elaborate embroidery and applique. This generally matched the embroidery abd applique on the jacket.

Cut

The American Fautleroy suit knee pants were generally knee length or just below knee length. Early knee pants were often cut at calf-level or even longer. By the 1880s when the Fauntlerpy suit appeared the shorter knee-length pants were becoming more standard. Some of the younger boys have longer knee pants commonly because mothes tended to buy cloy=yhes in larger sizes that the boys can grow into.

Matching

Fauntleroy suits were akways done with matching jackets and pants. They were always done in the same material and color.

Decoration

Fauntleroy suit decoration was quite varied. Some suits were plain. Others were highly decorated. The decoration is often sot immediately apparent. Many of the suits wrre black or other dark colors. Thus the decoration, commonly done in the same color as the jacket and pants. Thus it does not show up well in ohotographs. The decoration included elaborate embroidery and applique. The decoration was most common on the jacket, but we also see it on the pants as well. This decoration on the pants generally matched the embroidery abd applique on the jacket. These decorations were not only used on Fauntleroy suits. Military uniforms at the time used these decorations. We see them very commonly on Fauntleroy suits. Fauntleroy suit pants also commonly had the three buttons at the hem that were common on most knee pants.
