This portrait is unidentified. We believe that he is an American boy, probably photograpged in the 1890s. He looks to be about 12 years old. Notice the hymnal. We are guessing that he is being confirmed. We are not sure about his suit. We thought that it might be some kind of boy's tuxedo, but note that it appears to have been made to be worn open toshow off the boy's fancy Fauntleroy blouse. The boy here looks a little old to wear a Fauntleroy suit. We are not sure if this was how he normally dressed or was a specisal outfit for his confirmation.

We thought the boy was holding a hymnal. We are guessing that he is being confirmed. A reader writes, "I agree that confirmation seems a likely occasion for this boy's dressy Faunterloy suit. I doubt that he is carrying a hymnal, however. It looks to me as though he also carries a rosary in the same hand as the book, which would mean that he is either a High-Church Episcopalian (i.e. Anglo-Catholic) or Roman Catholic. Roman Catholic boys would probably be carrying a missal or prayerbook rather than a hymnal; Episcopal boys might be carrying the Book of Common Prayer and a rosary; but Prostestant boys didn't have rosaries.
