Unknown American Films

Figure 1.--

Our largest number of unidentified images are American. We have found quite a number of still that we ca nnot identify. This is not because we do not know much about American movies, although we clearly have a lot to learm. It is because that Hollywood hs been the heart of the world movie industry from an early point. There are just so many american films and HNC being an American website, we have the greatest access to American films. As a result we have found more American film images that we can not identify than from any other country, even other countries with large film industries. Most are early films, especially silent films of the 1910s and 20s. This is undertanable because large numbers of silent films have been completely lost. In some cases we only have a few stills. In other cases not even that. We are gradually identifying some of these films. Thanks to our HBC readers, we have made considerable progress in finding the titles for several unidentified American films, a least talkies from the 1930s. Silent filns contrinue to be more of a problem. This is unfirtunate because there is a lot of fashion information to be gleaned from these films. .

... Sandwich ...

Deals with a black family and a boy who was always getting into trouble. His mother is into some cult religious group. The mother ties her best to get the get the "badness" out of him. A HBC reader tells us that this title was probably "A Hero Ain't Nothing But a Sandwich".

Unknown Title

All we have here is a still. We are sure that it is American It looks like the late-1920s to us, perhaps the early-30s. The man, presumably a grandfather holds two children, agirl and we think a boyabout 4-9 years ild. It may be a silent film. The granfather looks familiar, but we can not identify him or the two children. The boy wears a short pants play suit and the girl a light summer frock. The father wears a smoking jacket, suggesting a wealthy or at least well off fmily. Both have whit knee socks and paten leather strap shoes. we have no idea about the story line. Hopefully HBC readers will recognize the film.

Unknown Title

Father decides to deal with his 10-year old bratty son, saying "You're going to mind me now."

Unknown Title

An aunt tells her nephew that he is invisible. Believing it, the boy goes around without his clothes so they don't give him away. His aunt, however, was of course only fooling him. There is an American film, 'The Invisible Boy' (1957), but I am not sure this is it. The plot here sounds a bit different. A HBC reader tells that this is definitely a different film.

Unknown Title

Fred McMurry movie. Two spoiled boys in Indian head dresses are involved. One is called Charlie.

Unknown Title

An Indiana family tours France. If I remember right, this was a Jimmy Stewart film. The younger boy is played by Disney regular Kevin Cocoran. He wears long pants except for one beach scene. The tidbit showing Fremch boys' clothing was at the end at an open air dance. If you look closely you can see a little French boy dancing in short shorts. A HBC reader tells me that the title is 'Bon Voyage'.

Unknown Title

Dick Van Patten movie about a family adopting kids. In one scene the black boy who proved difficult has just filled a big room with soap suds.

Unknown Title (1930s)

An obnoxious boy genius confronts a doctor rudely. He is only about 8 or so and wears a short pants suit affair.

Unknown Title

I think the title is something like "The Trials of Jake Delancy", a rather disturbing film. A family (mother, daughter, and son) has been taken hostage by a deranged man who speaks partly in Spanish. David Elliot plays a boy of about 11 or 12 years old. The deranged man makes the boy dance on a table without his clothes. A HBC reader tells me that the title is, "The Possession of Joel Delaney".

Unknown Title (early40s?)

Movie about an invisible boy and robots. The irritates his parents who I think are upset with his experiments.

Unknown Title (1930s)

I don't know the title, but I saw a nice clip of a Fred Astaire movie. He is in a musical instrument store doing one of his dance steps in front of a set of drums. A boy and his mother? are in the background. I thought it was Jackie Cooper, but he wasn't in any of the Astaire movies. The boy has a very wide white collar which he wears with a bow. I'd say he is about twelve. Madingly he stays in back of the drums and you cant see what else he is wearing. Finally he comes out where you can see him. He is wearing either very full knickers or bloomers, hard to tell in the brief spot I saw. The knickers/bloomers are just above his knees. He wears dark knee socks with his outfit. I didn't have a chance to note the shoes. From the looks of the movie it was made in the 1930s. I have since learned that it is 'Easter Parade'.

Unknown Title (1930s)

Lovely Shirley Temple movie. Shirley has lots of friend in some big city. She befriends a sissy boy. For some reason the boy needs some regular clothes. She makes the local bully who was teasing him change clothes with him. The bully looks sweet in the sissy outfit. I think it might be 'Little Miss Broadway'.

Figure 4.--Here we see a scene from a Tyrone Power film with star in a New York, presumably Central Park. The boy is having a icecream treat at an open air cafe. We are not sure about the title, but Power didn't make nany filns in the 1950s so we should be able to figure it out. The boy wears a peaked cap and a short pants suit. We are not sure who he was or his role in the film.

Unknown Titlle (1950s)

Here we see a scene from a Tyrone Power film with star in a New York, presumably Central Park. The boy is having a icecream treat at an open air cafe. We are not sure about the title, but Power didn't make nany filns in the 1950s so we should be able to figure it out. The boy wears a peaked cap and a short pants suit. This seems reasonable fir a boy from a well-to-do family at the time. We are not sure who he was or his role in the film. We have since identified the film and boy actors. A HBC reader tells us that it was 'The Eddie Duchin Story' (1956).

Unknown Hippy Film (1968)

Hollywood was obsessed with hippies and drugs. There were quite a few hippy-themedmovies, almost always including drugs in the story. And even more films in which we see hippies appearing. This appears to be one of them. We do not know the title of this film. It is obviously American. And we nelieve it was relarased in 1968. Amnd lookinga t the still we have found, it seems to be avout hippies. Given that, we suspect that we will eventually be able to figure out the title. We see two hippies, apparently mom and dad with a child, we think a girl. She is wearing a smart, very non-hippy looking outfit looking more like a miliraty uniform, cmolete with a military cap. The omly hippy itens are the iconic hippy peace symbol--both a dageed on the cap anf a necklace. Her parents do not kook impressed, but we re unsure why. We are not sure what she is holding, probably a flower. We have no idea what the story line was.
