Kleine Leute--Mal Ganz Grosz (West Germany, 1958)

Figure 1.--This German film was made in 1958, "Kleine Leute--Mal Ganz Grosz".

A reader has mentioned a German film to us. He does not know what the title was, but he knows that that it was made in 1958. We have since learned that it is "Kleine Leute--Mal Ganz Grosz".

Filmography

An Austrian reader tells us that this film is "Kleine Leute--Mal Ganz Grosz (translated I think "Little People: Once Very Big" (1958).

Cast

The older boy (Theo) was played by Roland Kaiser, a famous boy-actor in the later 1950s. Mostly he played a smart-mouth boy with a good heart, as he did in this film. The little boy (Norbert) was played by Michael Stein. A German reader tells us that he hasc never seen him in any other German films.

Plot

It is a humerous film bout three lads (Marietto Angeletti (Fabio) , Roland Kaiser (Theo) and Michael Stein (Norbert) (about 7-15 yo) and a girl (Cheryl Benard (Sabinchen) about 7 yo), travelling from Berlin to a southern town for holiday. As the childrens vacation area is infected of measles, they have to look for a new place to stay. In the end they find good people who care for them. Especially the biggest boy makes a lot of pranks. As usual there’s some couples finding and songs are sung, too. Finally Theo goes with Fabio and the Norbert into a cave, it tumbles down, but they can be rescued.

Schoeneberger Saengerknaben

The famous Berlin boy choir, Schoeneberger Saengerknaben, is featured in the film. The film is not about the choir. The choir was just there to sing the title song “Kleine Leute mal ganz gross”. As the Schoeneberger Saengerknaben choir is featured in the film, it is obviously a West German film. The Choir was a symbol of a free Berlin and often criticized by the Communists.

Costuming

Many children were involved in the film showing what German boys were wearing in the 1950s. The boys mostly wear short pants with kneesoks. Some boys wear Bavarian jackets and or lederhosen. The film also shows many different styles oif shoirts worn by German boys in the 1950s. In addition there’s a Swabian Folk Dancing Group including some kids. Thus the boys wear Swabian costume red vest, short trousers, black hat.

Setting

Actually the film was made in Bad Urach and a castle called Lichtenfels. Both in the Kreis of Reutlingen, southwest of Stuttgart.
