French Television: Networks

Tge French Government plays a major role in French television. More than half the networks are operated by the Government. France has seven principal broacast television networks. There are three independant commercial and four public networks. These networks are also available on cable and satellite. There are also four networks that are only available on cable and satellite, including a European news network. These networks broadcast primarily French-language programming. Some foreign films are shown late at night. One channel is operated by the state. Another is the French-German channel "Arte". French TV viewers casn receive many more French-language channels by satellite. Many African countriues have TV channels which broadcast in French. Many French networks can be received by broadcast, satellite and cable. Four networks are not broacasted (TV5, Euronews, TPS, and Canal Satellite).

Private Networks

CANAL+

CANAL+ is a private network. It has general programming with an emohasis on movies and sports.

CANAL SATELLIte

CANAL SATELLITE is a private network. It has general and thematic programming.

M6

M6 is a private network with general programming.

TF1

TF1 is a private network. It has general programming.

TPS

TPS is a private network. It is not broadcasted in France, but available on cable and satelitte. It has general and thematic programming.

Public Networks

The French Government plays a major in the country television industry.

ARTE

ARTE is a public network, sponsored by both French and German authorities. It has programming with a cultural orientation. Programs in both the French and German language are broadcast. ARTE has very interesting cultural discussions and world problem programs. A French reader tells us that he often watches German TV programs on this network. He rembers, for example, seeing the "Heimat 1" series on this network. He tells us," 'Arte' and 'France 2' have run Heimat and other foreign films. Most programming is in French, nevertheless a non negligible minority is interested in cultural approach of civilizations and peoples all over the world. Even close to their own country! (Hunsrück is located less than 100 km from the French boarder)."

EURONEWS

EURONEWS is a public network. It is not sponsored by the French Government, but a European group--I assume the European Union. It is not broadcasted in France, but available throughout Europe on cable and satellite. Programming is news oeiented.

FRANCE2

FRANCE2 is a public network. It has general programming.

FRANCE3

FRANCE2 is a public network. It has general and regional programming.

FRANCES

FRANCES is a public network. It has general programming which includes educational programs.

TV5

TV5 is a public network. TV5 is not broadcasted in France, but is distributed by cable and network and is available world wide.
