Italian Fascist Youth Group: International Influences

Figure 1.--

Italian Fascism and the Balilla had some influence around the world. Democracy can be messy and chaotic at times. Some in the 1920s and 30s were impressed with the appareent progress and order in Italy. Others admired the neatly uniformed and well drilled children of the Balilla. The Balilla influenced the Hitler Youth at an early stage of its development. The same is presumably the case of Fascist youth groups in Spain and the Balkans, although we have few specific details at this time. We know that The Balilla influenced the Indian Hindu nationalists.

Germany

The Balilla influenced the Hitler Youth at an early stage of its development.

Spain

The same is presumably the case of Fascist youth groups in Spain. Italy played a major role in Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War. We have no information, however, concerning contacts between the Balilla and Spanish Fascist youth organizers.

The Balkans

The same is presumably the case of Fascist youth groups in the Balkans, although we have few specific details at this time. The strongest Fadcist youth movement was in Greece. We have no information at this time on contacts between the Balilla anf Greek Fascist youth organizers.

India

We know that The Balilla influenced the Indian Hindu nationalists. Indian sources suggest that the Italian Fascism and the Balilla influenced the Hindu nationalist movement in India. This was not an organized effort by the Italians, although Italian diplomats did not discourage it. It was also of some concern to British officials in India. Italian propaganda attracted nationalist organizers in India. Hindu nationalists especially in Maharashtra were impressed with the Italian dictatorship and Mussolini. The Hindu nationalists had a very different vision for an independent India than Ghandi and the Congress Party.
