Italian Boys' Suits: Chronology

Figure 1.--This unidentified Italian boy was photographed with his sister, we believe in the 1950s, probably after church.

Our knowledge of Italian suits is still very limited. We have little igormation on the 19th century at this time or the early-20th century. We note boys generally wearing short pants suit in the mid-19th century. Short pants suits wre vey common through the 1950s, although we note boys in the 1950s wearing long pants suits as well. Boys in the 1960s increasingly began wearing long pants suits. A HBC reader has provided us an image of a popular suit style in the 1970s. Boys commonly wore short pants suits through the 1950s, but long pants suits began to become more common in the 1960s. Suits were very common in the early-20th centuy, but after World War II, casual clothes became increasingly common. Our information on Italian suits is still very limited.

The 19th Century

We do not yet have much information on Italian children's fashiobs in the 19th centuey. Our knowledge of Italian suits is still very limited. We have little igormation on the 19th century at this time. We note a Palermo boy wearing a vested cut-way jacket suit in the 1870s. Italy is one of the larger European countries, in terms of population. The European photographic record is smaller than that of America. And the Italian photographic record seems smaller than that of the other major Europen countries. And photography is our major source of information. We believe that the limited 19th cetury photogrphic record is primarily an economic matter. Italy and southern Eutope in general was relatively poor in comparison to Amerca and the northern Europeam countries. Northern Italy was relatively prosperous, but the south was poverty stricken. Whatever the reason, we do not yet have much information on 19th century suits.

The 20th Century

Nor do we know much about the early-20th century. But we gradally begin to aquire more images for our archive. We notice both single and double jackets in the 20th century. At the beginning of the centuyry we notuce Shortened-length pants, knee oantsvand jnickers. By the 1920s-50s we mostly see short pants suits. We note boys generally wearing short pants suit in the mid-20th century. Short pants suits were very common through the 1950s, although we note boys in the 1950s wearing long pants suits as well. Boys in the 1960s increasingly began wearing long pants suits. A HBC reader has provided us an image of a popular suit style in the 1970s. Boys commonly wore short pants suits through the 1950s, but long pants suits began to become more common in the 1960s. And as a result of the post-War Itaian Economic Mirace we see more Italian boys dressing more fashionbly, including boys in the south. Suits were very common in the early 20th centuy, but after World War II, casual clothes became increasingly common. Our information on Italian suits is still very limited.

The 1900s

Nor do we know much about the early-20th century. But we gradally begin to aquire more images for our archive. We notice both single and double jackets in the 20th century. At the beginning of the century we notuce shortened-length pants, both knee pants and knickers.

The 1920s

By the 1920s-50s we mostly see short pants suits.

The 1930s

We mostly see Italian boysd wearingh single breasted jackets in the 1930s. Some of the jaakets had patch pockets. Boys wore suits with oopen collr shirts iyhout nreckwesr. WEe think that vthis was common sdummer style. Our Italian archive, however, is not large enough to assess rektive prevslencvr. We also see We note boys generally wearing short pants suit sin the 1930s. Thhis was not univedsal, but was by far the most common.

The 1950s

Here we see a boy wearing a single-brested short pants suit, we think in he 1950s, probably the late-50s (figure 1). Continental bnoys, esoecially Italian and Frenvh boy tended ti wear theur short oanmts shoirter than English boys. Note the ankle socks.

The 1960s

We notice a press report about a children's fashion show in Rome during 1960. Unfortuntely there is a cutecy caption rather than an informative captionabout the fashion show. The photogrph shows two children confidently striding down a fashion runway wearing matching outfits. The boy look to be about 7-years old. He wears a peaked cap, single breasted jacket and short pants. Along with the suit hewears a white shirt, cross-tie, and white knee socks. The girl with him, perhaps his sister wears a matching suit with a pleated skirt rather than pants. The photograph was dated November 21, 1960.
