The Spencers--Summer Attire

Figure 1.-- We have also noted family photographs taken by the father at Amberson Avenue home. The family had just returned from their Marion summer house. It was September, 1899, when the family were still wearing summer clothes. Here Mark is only 6 and sits astradle with his legs dangling. Charles (sitting on the ground in the right foreground) is only 4 years old and still apparently unbreached. Image courtesy of the Hillman Library archives, University of Pittsburgh.

Of course summers at the turn of the century mean that everyone, especially the children wore white. The family spent vacations at another large house in Marion, Masssacusetts. We have also noted family photographs taken by the father at Amberson Avenue home. The family had just returned from their Marion summer house. It was September, 1899, when the family were still wearing summer clothes. Almost everyone is in white, but even so notice the black long stockings. Here Mark is only 6 and sits astradle with his legs dangling. Charles (sitting on the ground in the right foreground) is only 4 years old and still apparently unbreached. The girls in white are presumably the five Spencer daughters. Their names are given already on the main Spencer HBC page. Their mother is the only person wearing dark clothing. Notice that Mark wears a summer-style sailor suit with knee pants. He has a striped dicky. He wears long black stockings even though it is still summer time. The clasp of his hose supporter is visible on his left leg.

White Clothes

Of course summers at the turn of the century mean that everyone, especially the children wore white. White is still popular for the summer. At the turn of the century it was he only color. The only exception was the sockings. Mny children wore black stockings even in the summer.

Summer Cottage

The family spent vacations at another large house in Marion, Masssacusetts. We have also noted family photographs taken by the father at Amberson Avenue home. Many well to do families hd summer cottages. They were called cottages, but were often good sized houses in rural or coastal settings.

Image Here (September 1899)

The family had just returned from their Marion summer house. It was September, 1899, when the family were still wearing summer clothes. Almost everyone is in white or light-colored clothing, but even so notice the black long stockings.

Mark

Mark was the oldest boy. Here Mark is only 6. He wears a light-colored summer sailor suit. It is probably a white suit with light-blue stripes. He sits astradle an outdoors lounge of some kind with his legs dangling. Mark's sailor suit has knee pantsas was common for boy's his age. He has a striped dicky. The wide stripes are differentbthan the oines we have usually noted. More interestingly there appears to be some other kind of collar just above the dickey. He wears long black stockings even though it is still summer time. The clasp of his hose supporter is visible on his left leg.

Charles

Charles (sitting on the ground in the right foreground) is only 4 years old and still apparently unbreached. Itis a little difficult to make out just what Charles is wearing, but it is definitely a skirted garment. His hair has already been cut short.

The girls

The girls in white are presumably the five Spencer daughters (Adeline, Kate, Ethel, Mary and Elizabeth). They are all done out in immaculate white dresses. Notice that the youngest daughter (Elizabeth I think) has very short hair. She might be mistaken for a boy. Only two the girls wear hair bows. Elizabeth is occupying herself with the family dog and seem's a lot happier about the family photograph than her brother Charles.

Mother

Their mother is the only person wearing dark clothing. I'm not sure why she wears a black dress. Surely she has white summer clothes. Perhaps because it has turned September she got out her black dress.
