Wanganui Round the Lake Rely

This is an annual event hosted by Wanganui Collegiate, in which each of four team members runs a 2 km circuit around Virginia Lake. This year's event was held on July 29th in cold and blustery conditions. As usual, each age category attracted a large number of teams from all over North Island and the standard of competition was very high. Our teams were: Form Three: Marcus Hancock, Joel Early, Justen Smith, Simson Gillum. Junior: Scott McGregor, Tom Mace, Conrad Smith, Andrew Turner. Senior: Carl Van Lent, Tim Rush, Chris Hullah, Vaughan McLean. Of 28 starters the Form 3 team finisdhed in 15th place, not quite up to their potential as one runner, who shall remain naimless, took a one and a half minute detour in the wrong direction. Consistency marked the performance of the other three runners as they all lapped within 10 seconds of each other. Despite the junior team being affected by an injury, they finished in a very creditable 3rd place. Well done! Sharing the NP Girls High School bus down to the event certainly inspired Vaughan McLean who blitzed a 7.07 minutes final lap to take the senior team home in 7th place, Another very good performance. Fastest laps un other divisions were Marcus Hancock and Andrew Turner.

Andrew Turner, Frances Douglas Memorial College, 1996
