Badminton is more of a an activity than a sport at many schools. It is also often used as a game in PE classes. But we note both intra- and even inter-school competitions.

Boys' Badminton

There was a great upsurge in interest this year, resulting in four teams entering the interschool competition. , one in Division A and three in Division B. [Note: This kind of wide-spread competition is a hallmark of New Zealand sports programs.] The Division A team of Michael Rynvos (Captain), Al Kok Ho, Doh Hiik Wong, Kim Hoe Liew and Kelvin Chin came very close to einning their section. The crunch match against Boys' High resulted in a 3-3 draw which we lost by one-point on a count-back! This meant we had to face the eventual champions, Burnside, in the semi-final, and finished third overall, by far our best result in several years. In Division B, th A team was comprised of four relatively inexpeienced players in Joseph Pearce, Bjorn Nilsen, Roger Chen and Mervin Chin. They displayed excellent commitment and their performance improved dramatically during the season. The squad could well form the basis of an excllent senior team in two years. The B team was based on the survivors from the Form 3 team which performed so well in the last season, Perry Lee (Captain), Ben Cook, and Sean Gourley. They were joined by Shannon Taylor and Devin Abrms. For various reasons the team seldom played at full strngth, so overall results were somewhat disappointing. Within this, though, there were some excellent individual performanes. The Cteam comprised Michael Winn (Captain), Ryan Coulbeck, Neville Grossman, Todd Hawthorne, and Sam Kunowski. As some of the team were beginners, we knew it would be difficult in Division B and so it proved, though to everyone's amazement we started the season with a win! (WE won't dwell on some of the later results.) Over all, this was a very successful season for Boys' Badminton at Cashmere High School. My thanks to all players, particularly the captains, for their help.

Mr Kelly, Lymphad, Cashmere High School, 1993
