Basketball appears to have become a major sport in New Zealand. We noticed considerable interest at the secondary school level. Thids surprised us because basketball is not very popular in Britain. Many secondary schools had quite a few basketball teams. And again unlike Britain we notice both boys and girls playing basketball in New Zealand.
Not having quite the mumbers for 3 teams, I made 2 teams of ten which were a little large as game times don't allow for the players to establish a playing pattern. The coaches did exceptionally well in formatting systems to satisfy the majoeity. Thank you to STARS Travel for sponsoring the A team and we hope to see you next year supporting the players. Well done to all members of both teams in dusplaying sportsmanship on and off the court and to the efforts shown at training sessions. Keep up the good work. Thank you to the coaches and supporters of both teams for the tremendous amount of assistance given to all the players throughout the season.

Well, it was another successful year for the Cashmere positive-reinforcement-and-self-esteem team, alias senior boys' B basketball. All the teams we played, with one exception, went away feeling much better about themselves! Unfortunately Mr Fortune, our mentor, missed that winning game. But the important thing was that we all had a good time, so team spirits were usually high, especially at training when we played each other. Despite one of the mainstays of the team, who will be identified only as player X, only playing one game, we usually managed to get our noses ahead at some stage in each game. Some hall-of-famers were regular season rookie Ace "Hospital" Ward, our import James Humphreys, who was out of this, orld (from Urannus), Andrew "Blackboard-Fingers" May, Andrew "The Other One" Radford, Skooter Harris, Chris "Kros" Chaimers (because of his dribble, not the band!) and Mike "The Music Monitor" Mitchell. Cameo appearances were also made by Alan Majendie, Dexter Sue (player and coach), Nick Anticich, Jeremy Sarse and Mike Hunt.
