Hockey is one of many sports played in New Zealand that came primarily from the country's British heritage. Hockey appears to be a minor sport in New Zealand, at least among the boys. It is a major girls' sport. New Zealand schools primarily play field hockey. We do note a few secondary schools involved in ice hockey.

Hockey

FDMC has a senior and junior team in the 1996 competition. The teams trained together each week with Mrs. Helen Drew managing and Miss Moira Senior as our specialist coach. The improvement in the level of skills and team work over the season was noticeable and full credit to all boys who participated. It was the first year a team from FDMC competed in the intermediate division and the team was able to put together nore wins than losses. The senior team finished on top of their Division Three competition having lost only one game all season--a great team effort. Congratulations to all hockey players and thanks to Mrs Drew and all parents who supported college hockey.

Ice Hockey

The start of the inter-school competition was delayed due to the major repairs to the Allpine Sports Ventre after damage caused by the August 1992 snowstorm. However, when the competition evebtually got underway in June, the team played consistently well, winning every game except one and reaching the semi-finals, which were held on Sunday, October 3. A successful day saw Cashmere High School placed first out of the ten teams entered in the competition, winning the High School League Challenge Cup.

First XI Hockey Squad

The first 11 fought valiantly against top sides in Auckland even though the amount of goals scored against them may not reflected this. Roger Hillman's defense was at a high standard, and Shaun Jordon's deadly accurate reflexes saved the team from embarassment in many situations. Thefront line of Hickey, Lad and Sharma performed well and Yates and Rewa-Morgan also had good seasons. .... The win against St. Kents in the last match proved to be a confidence booster going into the national tournament. Kelston finished 9th out of 12 in a competition where all teams were of a very high standard. .... Kelston's most valuable player at the tournament were James Robertson and Saylesh Bhula, Piyush Lad lead from the front, nd Roger Hillman umpired 14 games.
