Many New Zealand secondary schools have wrestling teams.
A major innovation and improvement of the wrestling gym this year was the installation of the tiered seating around the main wrestling mat area. The sport in this college is now far more spectator-friendly which means that a large number of boys, including the purely curious, can experience and savour the suspense, drama and full-on rush of excitement as wrestlers struggle for supremacy in the wrestling mat. Mist schools in NZ did nit form official wrestling teams this year because of the unfortunate timing of the NZ Nationals. They were held early in term 1 to coincide with the departure of the NZ Schoolboy wrestling team to the USA. Neil Scott represented our schooland was one of the 12 bots from NZ to do so. Two aspects of the experience which impressed Neil were the opulent facilities that schoolboy wrestlers enjoy in the USA, and the friendliness of the host families he stayed with. Jim Gollan leaves us this yearand will be remembered as a particularly fine wrestler and an excellent example to other wrestlers of how sheer courage can often turn a near defeat situation into a victory. All the best Jim.
