Activities: Boating--Types

Figure 1.--.

There are different kinds of boating, including row boats, canones, sail boats, as well as other options. Canoeing seems particularly popular, although by canoeing the British meam kayacking. Sailing is also very popular, but a little more complicated for the schools. While row boats and canoes can be used on a small stream or pond, sailing requires a bit more space. Only a few schools have a pond large enough, although a few have ponds where the small one person boats can be used, especially by the younger children just beginning.

Canoeing

Canoeing seems particularly popular, although by canoeing the British meam kayacking. Canoeing is handt because it is possible in streams and small ponds. Thus it is an activity several schools can organize at the school with out access to large water fronts.

Sailing

Britain of course has a long and rich seafaring tradition. Most of that tradition wa during the age of sail. As an island country, there is no location in Britain that is more than a few hours from the coast and there are quite a number of lakes suitable for sailing. Many prep schools thus offer the students some kind of sailing experience.
