Here we see a depiction of a stagecoach in northeastern New York (1869). By this time the railroad net work was becoming increasingly developed in the northern states. It is a work by Winslow Homer (1836-1910) entitled 'On the Road to Lake George'. The advent of steamboat technology (early-19th century). This began as Lake George ws becomng a resort area). The railroad did not reach Lake George until (1882). Home print was done while visitors still needed to use the stagecoach. It was a wood engraving published in Appleton’s Journal vol. 1, (July 24, 1869). Yiu can see the holiday makers with parasols rather than armed gurds with shot guns waving at tural school children with their lunch pails. Lake George with its clear water and beautiful scenery combined with historicl sites would become a favorite vacation place for wealhy New Yorkers during the Gilded Age.
