Jungen: Eure Welt: Annual Volumes (Volume VI: 1943)

Figure 1.--The 1943 edition of "Jungen" Eure Welt" had a veey strong military focus. It was during 1942 when the volune was prepared that the War began to go against Germany. I'n not sure just what area of the g;obe depicted.

Volume VI published in 1943 was the last volume. The content is similar to the other volumes. There are sections on current events, politics, the war, arts and crafts, games, sports, wildlife and similar content. Much of the book is devoted to the War and boys preparing for military service through the Hitler Youth program. An important aspect of the Hitler Youth was to funnel boys into the various services of the German military. Of course there were countless military victories which could be used for the early volumes. This changed in 1942 when NAZI armies began to experience military defeats, but the publishers could simply harken back to earlier victories. The 1943 volume is all black and white, a small indication of the deteriorating military situation. After 1943 the war situation declined to the point that large books like this could no longer be published.

1942 Events

The book was released in 1943, but prepared in 1942. Thus it was 1942 events that one would expect to be found in the book. The problem was that 1942 was not like 1941 with a virtual constant stream of NAZI victories. The Wehrmacht managed to stabilize the Eastern Front fter the defeat before Moscow, but there were enormous losses of men and material. As a result, the Whermacht no longer had the capabilitybof launching its 1942 summer offensive across the entire front. Hitler chose the south rather than renewing the drive on Moscow, attracted by the resources of the Ukraine. This of course led to Stalingerad. In the west, the British and Canadians received a sharp set back at Dieppe and Rommel scored impressive victories in the Western Desert. This changed dramatically at El Alenaine and with America now in the War, the Allied Torch landingings seized Morocco and Algeria from Vichy and threatened the Afrika Korp's rear. Boys following the corse of the awr with pins in maps must hve been struck by the sudden reveral of fortunes. The British intensified the air war over the Reich. The one bright spot for the NAZIs was the continued success of the U-boats in the North Atlantic.

Specifications

The 1943 volune was hardcover in half-linen. There were 488 pages, 221 black and white photos, and 85 illustrations. The author seems to have been Wilh. Uterm. It was published by by Zentralv., Franz E. Nachf., Gmbh., Munchen, 1942. I am not sure who Wilh. Uterm was. The publisher was the central publishing house of the NAZI Party. We note that the subtitle change ommitting mention of the HitlervYouth continued in the 1943 volune. The book was very heavily illustrated. There is also artwork.

Articles

The content is similar to the other volumes. There are sections on current events, politics, the war, arts and crafts, games, sports, wildlife and similar content. Unfortunately we do not yet have a list of the articles. We do have a few page scans which show some of the articles. There were articles about the HJ in all of these different volumes. In this volume we see many HJ activities preparing the boys for war.

Figure 2.-- Here we see Hitler Youth boys training with ilitary communication equipment. I am not entirely sure what is happening here, but would guess the boys are practising receiving Moris code.

Choice of Topics

The topics addressed in these books were obviously chosen to appeal to boys. There were a range of topics, but all chosen with a focus on boys. Much of the book is devoted to the War the direction of which fundamentally changed in 1942. The focus on the War is something that would have appealed to many boys, but one of the main purposes of the HJ was to prepare boys for the War. As a result, the articles not only dealt with the War, but on HJ programs preparing boys for war duties. This was dine through the Hitler Youth program. The activities not only introduced boys to military discipline, but developed a range of military skills. There were small arms training as well as training in orienteering, signals, map reading and other skills useful in combat operaions. There were also special HJ divisions which developed skills needed by the Navy and Luftwaffe. An important aspect of the Hitler Youth was to funnel boys into the various services of the German military. Of course there were countless military victories which could be used for the early volumes. This changed in 1942 when NAZI armies began to experience military defeats, but the publishers could simply harken back to earlier victories.

Color Photography

There were projects and amusements that young people could make.
