Japanese Mail Order Catalogs and Advertisements with Boys Clothings: Garments

Figure 1.--A standard item for Japanese primary school children is a book bag or satchel. We are not sure where this ad apprared, but believed it appeared around 2004-05, although the coding suggests 1977. We are not at all sure..

School uniform items are extensively covered in Japanese catalogs. Only about one-third of Japanese state primary schools have uniforms and they tend to be very basic. Blazers are only worn at some orimary schools. Most schools have uniforms consisting of white shirts and blue shorts, but some schools have different uniforms. The sailor suit style here (figure 1) is not common for boys, but worn by many girls--mostly at the secondary school level. Almost all secondary schools, however, require uniforms. Some items such as colorful caps and bookbag are worn even at schools that do not require uniforms.
