Jelmoli Boys' Bib-front Overalls and Apron (Winter, 1947)

Figure 1.-- We also note bib-front play/work oceralls done with both short and long pants. The illustration gives the impression that they were work pants, but we notice boys wearing then for play. They seem similar to the bib-front overalls worn in America.

Jelmoli

We note a catalog form the Grand magasins Jelmoli. Grand magasins Jelmoli has for many years been the flagship department store chain of Switzerland. Johann Peter Jelmoli-Ciolina founded founded the store in 1838 by . Ciolina must have been the maiden name of his wife. He was from the Swiss-italian section of Switerland. The company has always been headquartered in Zurich where the flag-ship department store was opened. It opened branches throughout Switrzerland, but a few years back it sold or closed all its branches and only kept the large store in Zurich. I would say it was always an "up-scale" department store. The catalog-department was a very small part of their operations and the catalogs carried a very small amount of merchandise, compared to what was available in their stores. The catalog-department was added in 1899.

Popularity

I'm not sure how popular bib-front pants were in Switzerland. The illustration gives the impression that they were work pants, but we notice boys wearing then for play. They seem similar to the bib-front overalls worn in America. Notice the use of the English term "overall". A good example is Tom in front of his playhouse about 1943, a few years before this catalog.

Pants Types

We also note bib-front play/work pants done with both short and long pants.

Knaben-Overall (Boys overalls)

The bib-front overalls were done in sizes 4-14 years. The ad copy read, "Knaben-Overall aus schwerem waschechtem Baumwoll-Grisette, blau meliert. No 5012,018. fuer 4-5 Jahre Fr. 9.50, 6 Jahre 10.00,7 Jahre Fr. 10.50, 8m Jahre Fr. 11.00,9m Jahre Fr. 11.5o, 1o Jahre Fr. 12.00, 11 Jahre Fr. 12.50,12 Jahre Fr. 13.00, 13-14 Jahre Fr. 13.50. Keine Auswahl."

Knaben Schuerze (Boys' Apron)

The apron-style overalls were done in lengths rather than age sizes like the long pants overalls. I'm not sure why this was done, but presumably the length of the apron was not as important as the length of the pants. Note also that they were a lot less expensive. The ad copy read, "Knaben Schuerze aus solidem Baumwoll-Zwilch, waschecht, gruen oder blau. No 5012,019. Laengen: 65 cme Fr. 3.20, 75 cm Fr. 3.50, 85 cm Fr. 3.90."
