Christian IV's first wife was Anne Catherine of Brandenburg (the foudational state of Prussia) and family. Christian met Anne on a journey in Germany (1595) and decided to marry her. Anne Catherine and her parents were present at his coronation (1596). The marriage was arranged (1597). Queen Anne Catherine has not attrcted much historical interest. Yhis probanly means that she had little political influence. She commonly accompanied Christian on his travels. Ath the time, she was praised for her modesty and religious devotion. We have seen no discussion as to wheter the marriage was a happy on or not. Chistin did take mistresses motly at the end of their marriage. The consanbt string of child births is probbly a indiction tht it was a reltivly successful marriage. hey had seven children. The oldest surviving son was Christian (1603)-1647), but he died unexpectedy just before his father. As a result, Frederick (1609-70), suceeded his father as Frederick III. A third son Ulrik was nurdered (1611-33). Threy lost three of their children even before Prince Christian died. Two daughters, Sophia and Elisabeth, and their eldest named son, Frederick, were lost at a very young age. The Queen died (1612). Her legacy was oneof unassuming virtue amid the royal extravagance of the day. Because Price Chistian was killed in battle (1647), his younger brother Prince Frederick became king when Christian IV died (1648), This was as the same year tthat the Thirty Yers War was ended by the Treatty of Weshtphalia. Frerderick was not included in the portrait here because there was no belief that he would be king.
