Friedrich Franz IV succeeded as Grand Duke in 1897 on the death of his father, Grand Duke Friedrich Franz III. Friedrich Franz married Alexandra, née Princess of Hanover (1882- ). They had four children. Their first son was Friedrich Franz V, Hereditary Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1910- ). Friedrich Franz IV's other four children were: Christian Ludwig, Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1912- ), Thyra, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1919- ), Anastasia, Princess Friedrich Ferdinand of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg (1922- ). She married on September 1, 1943, at Wiligrad. Friedrich Franz IV was designated Regent of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1918 upon the death of his distant cousin, Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich VI of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Abdicated as both Grand Duke and Regent in November 1918 in the aftermath of World War I. He succeeded as de jure Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in 1918 upon the renunciation of the title by Duke Karl Michael, the last male of the house of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Friedrich-Franz IV fell from power on November 14, 1918. He was close to the German royal family as his sister was Princess Cecilie, wife of the German Crown Prince. He also abdicated the throne of his cousins the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Friedrich Franz IV died on November 17, 1945 at Flensburg.
Friedrich Franz was the son of Friedrich Franz III, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna of Russia (1860–1922). They married in Saint Petersburg (1879).
Friedrich Franz III and Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna had three children who married wll. Alexandrine (1879–1952) was the oldest. She married King Christian X of Denmark. Friedrich Franz IV (1882–1945) as the eldest boy inherited the crown. Cecile (1886–1954) the youngest married married Wilhelm, son of Wihhelm II and was the German Crown Prince at the time of World War I.
