Luxemburg Royalty: Grand Duke John's Children's Clothes--The Boys

Figure 1.-- Here is the royal family about 1965-66 with the five children. The girls wear prim dresses. The older boys wear trim suits. Prince Guillaume wears a blue shorts set.

We note the boys wearing a range of formal and casual outfits. A portrait of Prince Guillaume about 1964 shows him wearing rompers. I'm not sure about the color. As a little older boys he wore a light-blue button-on shorts set as seen here about 1965-66 (figure 1). A few years earlier he might have still worn a romper suit at this age. The other boys may have worn romper suits at this age, although we do not yet have images of them to be sure. Other images show him wearing bib-front shorts as well as sweaters and slacks. The portait here shows the two older boys wearing trim-fitting single-breasted suits (figure 1). Earlier portraits show Prince Henri Albert Gabriel wearing a trim short pants suit. It is interesting that while Prince Jean in this image is about the same age as Prince Henri was in pj-fam64, Jean wears a long pants suit while Henri wore a short pants suit. This documents how the age of switching from short to long pants was rapidly dropping. By now the convention barely exists. The girls wear elegant if a little prim dresses. Notice the hair bands they often wore.
