English School Uniforms: Andy (1960s)

Figure 1.--This is a professional charcoal portrait of me when I was about 5 years old. It was scetched by a famous artist called Honer Raul. I was wearing a jumper with buttons all the way down. The artist has done the shirt as a kind of orange shade. That was probably to provide a little contrast. I ws probably wearing a white shirt.

I thought you might like a picture of me on my first day at school in England aged 5 in 1960. As You can see the uniform is very typical of the time wearing a cap, blazer, long socks and sandals. The blazer was green and so was the cap. [HBC note: Notice how in grey scale that the green blazer and grey shorts look very similar, showing how difficult it is to try to assess colors in blck and white photographs.] The shorts were grey flannel, which is very typical of the time. I remember the uniform had a very distinct smell of being new. The school was called Highfield situated in the town of East Grinstead, West Sussex. I went there at the age of 5 and left when I was 7, before going to a preparatory boarding school. Highfield was a small private school. I use to catch the bus from home which was about 3 miles away. I remember being beaton with the slipper by the head master Mr Gordon Walker for mis behaving on the bus one day. It was very painful! I never forgave the pupil who reported me to the head master! My prep school was called Feltonfleet near Cobham in Surrey (UK). I wore grey shirt with a tie, clerical grey flannel shorts and long grey socks with blue stripes at the top. I was there from 7 to 12 years of age.

First School: Highfield

I thought you might like a picture of me on my first day at school in England aged 5 in 1960. As You can see the uniform is very typical of the time wearing a cap, blazer, long socks and sandals. The blazer was green and so was the cap. Prep School: Feltonfleet

My prep school was called Feltonfleet near Cobham in Surrey (UK). I wore grey shirts with a tie, clerical grey flannel shorts and long grey socks with blue stripes at the top. I was there from 7 to 12 years of age. Feltonfleet was a boarding school, with about 80 boys. Our Head Master was Kieth Leighton. he had a parting down the middle of his hair and wore a black gown over his suit. I remember he was very strict. If you did not perform well in the class in Form Orders, which was read out each month, he would ask you to be outside his study at 12.30. I was terrified of the green and red book he carried into the common room to read out our places in the class. I was beaton once with the slipper. Anyone given a caning you could here the cracking sound from the library next door to the study. We played rugger and hockey in the winter and cricket in the summer. I am also enclosing pictures that include me throwing the discus aged 15. In the second picture I am standing watching. You can ignore the swimming picture. The sports wear has not changed much, but the shorts were a little shorter than they are now.

Public School: Crookham Court

After finishing at Feltonfleet, I went on to public school. My public (private secondary) school was Crookham Court near Newbury in Berkshire England. This was a boarding school. There were about ten boys to a dormatory. The uniform is a tweedy green jacket, grey shirt, school blue tie with the school shield on it, and grey trousers and sandals. We worn blue jumpers for classes at school, but had to wear our blue school cap and our blazers when we were outside the school boundary. There were 80 boys and we had two head masters. Roy Cotton was an acedemic and taught English Literature, Geography and Geology. Commander Smithwick was a retired Royal Navy Officer and taught Maths. We played soccer, hockey, basket ball and cricket. We also went on cross country runs and did service duties like cleaning work around the school. We were allowed to have bicycles. Opposite the school was a military American airbase. It was situated on Greenham Common. We used to cycle around the base and chatted to the guards at the main entrance A photograph includes me in a group photo. I am in the second row down from the top fourth from the left.
