Andy: Family Photograph Album

Figure 1.--This is another picture of my father (Jim) taken about 1915 with his mother Nangie Hall. He wears a white dress. That wa very common in the 19th century. It became less common after the turn-of-the 20th century, but really young boys like my fther hrecstill wore dresses.

Our family phototograph album has some delightful photographs of my parents and uncles when they were young. Theey oprovide interesting images of children clothes in the ealy 20th century.

Image 1: Father and Uncle

This is an interesting picture of my Uncle Bill in a sailor suit. He wears a middy blouse and black shorts. The middy blouse has the usual black silk scarfe. My father (Jim) is dressed in a dress (I suppose this was quite a usual dress for both sexes of that early age at that period). This picture was taken in about 1916. There was an age gap of 4 years. Both brothers joined the army as offices during the World War II. Bill was posted in Gibraltar, whilst my father was sent to Iraq. After the War they joined the family business of Hall & Co (builders merchants) as directors. Bill was chairman and my father Managing Director.

Image 2: Father and Grandmother

This is another picture of my father (Jim) taken about 1915 with his mother Nangie Hall (figure 1). He wears a white dress. That wa very common in the 19th century. It became less common after the turn-of-the 20th century, but really young boys like my fther hrecstill wore dresses.

Image 3: Uncles

This is a picture of two uncles of mine probably taken about 1919. The eldest is John and the younger one is Peter Ward. These two brothers became pilots. During World War II. John flew Tempests and Lycanders, while Peter flew Blenheims and later Lancasters. John became a Squadron Leader and after the War started up the General Aviation Safety Committee and was awarded the MBE (Member of the British Empire) for his services to flight safety. Peter became a civil pilot and flew for Lufthanza on Constelalions then onto British European Airways (later intergrated with part British Airways) on Viscounts and Comets as a Captain.
