Weimar Republic: Individual Schools

Figure 1.--This German school portrait is unidebntified. It shows a class of younger primary boys with their teacher. We would guess that it was taken about 1920. It looks to be a class from a rural village school. Many of the boys wear the suits that buttoned at the collar without lapels.

There was a great deal of diversity in the clothes German boys wore to school during the Weimar era. One way of assessing the popularity of different garments at the time is looking at individual classes during the period to see what boys were wearing. Many boys in the early 1920s wore the suits thast buttoned at the collar without lapels. Some boys wore sweaters rather than suits. I think these were generally the boys from less affluent families. We notice knee pants were very common, often with long stockings in the early 20s. Gradually short pants and kneesocks become more common.. Often some of the boys in the class wore sailor suits. Many but not all of the boys have close-cropped hair. This style gradually became less important by the late 20s. We have found quite a number of German school images. Infortunately few are unidentified by the name of the school. The fashions allow us to approximately work out the year. We welcome reader assessments as to the approximate date of the unidentified images. Without the name of the school, we have no idea where the photographs were taken.

Unidentified Class (about 1920)

This German school portrait is unidentified. It shows a class of younger primary boys with their teacher. We would guess that it was taken about 1920. It looks to be a class from a rural village school. The boys look to be younger primary boys, about 7-8 years old. Many of the boys wear the suits that buttoned at the collar without lapels. Some boys wore sweaters rather than suits. I think these were generally the boys from less affluent families. All the boys wear knee pants of varying length with darklong stockings. Some of the boys in the class wear sailor suits. Many but not all of the boys have close-cropped hair.

Unidentified Class (about 1925)

This class in about 1925 shows boys dressed in both sailor suits and regular suits in about equal proportins. Two of the boys wear sailor suits, but the boys in regular suits seem to be wearing mostly short pants, but with calf-length instead of knee socks. There may be one girl and one boys wears a velvet suit. The boys seem to vary in age from about 7 to 9 years of age.

Unidentified Class (about 1925)

This class in about 1925 shows boys dressed in both sailor suits and regular suits, although the regular suits are slightly more common. All of the boys appear to be wearing short pants. There is one child with long hair who is almost certainly a boy. Several boys wear smocks of many varied styles. The boys seem to vary in age from about 9 to 11 years of age.

Unidentified Class (about 1930)

This class of older boys, about 11-13 years of age, wear suits and sweaters with short pants and kneesocks. These older boys do not wear sailor suits or smocks.

Unidentified Class (about 1930)

Boys at this boarding school wear sweaters, short pants, and kneesocks. There shorts are cut shorter than in the 1920s. For some reason they wear their belts over their sweaters.
