American Little Lord Fauntleroy Suits: The 1920s--Ages

Figure 1.-- We note a boys wearing a short pants Fauntleroy suit for his violin recital, probably in the late-20s. He looks to be abou 6 yerars old (figure 1). It was common at the time for children to dress up more formally for recitals than is the case today. We think recitals were also more common.

Fauntleroy suits a with the general pattern were mostly worn by younger pre-school boys. A good example is Kibel Jr. in the 1929 The Boys Buyer. He is wearing a fany Fauntleroy styled party suit. We see some school-age boys wearing Fauntleroy outfits. The younger boys in grades 1 and 2, perhaps 3, but not much beyond that. The 1927 suit offered by Lane Bryant catalog offered a Fauntleroy suit described as a Velveteen suit in 1927 up to age 8 7 years. We note a boys wearing a short pants Fauntleroy suit for his violin recital, probably in the late-20s. He looks to be about 6 years old (figure 1). His outfit is very similar to the Lane Bryant offering. It was common at the time for children to dress up more formally for recitals than is the case today. We think recitals were also more common. We suspect that the age range in the Lane Bryant catalog was the basic upper limit, up to 8 years or so. This looks to be about the age of the boy pictured with his brother and sister on the previous page. This suggests that while the prevalence was much reduced, the age range was basically similar to earlier periods. Although we think that Fauntleroy suits were less common for younger boys, we believe because the idea of dressimh pre-school boys in elaborate, fancu ouyfits was less popular.
