American Fancy Older-boy Blouses: Chronology

older Fauntleroy blouses
Figure 1.--This cabinet card portrait is undated, but the mount suggests the 1890s, probably the late-1890s. The boy holds a dulcimer. He wears a striped Fauntleroy blouse with alarge collar abd floppy blouse. He looks to be about 8-9 years ols. The studio is C. Hagemann & Co in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The chronology of the older boy blouses was a little different than that of he classic blouses. We see boys wearing these blouses after the classic Fauntleroy suit and blouse had largely gone out of style. Our chronlogy is not yet definitive, but seems to be about 1895-1910. The cabinet card portrait on the previous pahe was dated 1898. We hope to refine this chronology as our archive expands. We have found portraits that are undated that definited were taken in the 1890s and 1900s, but we cannot further refine the chronology at this time. We do not see them in the 1880s and very few in the 1890s, at least the early-1890s. The early-1910s is possible. Most of these images are not dated so we have to estimate the date. Thus we can not be precise. Most of the imags are cabinet cards and here the mount style is very helpul with the dating.
