American Little Lord Fauntleroy Suit Garments: Headwear--Hats

Figure 1.-Here we have twp boys, presumably brothers from Kent, Ohio. The cabinent card portrait is undated, but was probably takebn in the 1890s. The boys look to be about 3-6 years old. The younger boy has hair done in a top curl. We don't know wjat kind of hat he wore. His older brother holds his hat. It is a staw hat with a flat top and medium brim. There is no streamer.

The most common, or at least the hat most associated with the Fauntleroy suit was the wide-brimmed sailor hat. That is the headwear often used in illustrations. It is not as common in the actual potographic redord. We do see a number of them, usually worn by younger boys. We see other sailor-style hats worn with Fauntrleroy suits. There were two major stylistic elements, the crown and the brim. We note both rounded and flat crowns. We also notice hats with widely varied brim widths. There were other variables, including the hat band, streamers, and chin straps. We do not notice many other hat styles worn with Fauntleroy suits. Many of the hats we notice were straw hats, but we do notice some other materials. We do notice some other hats, but we are not etirely sure of the proper name for them. Some boys wore adult-styled hats, but not usually with Fauntleroy suits. As some of these hats are large, the boys in many portraits are not actually wearing them.

Broad-brimmed Sailor Hat

The most common, or at least the hat most associated with the Fauntleroy suit was the broad or wide-brimmed hat. This is normally considered a style of sailor hat. That is the headwear often used in illustrations. It is not as common in the actual potographic redord. We do see a number of them, usually worn by younger boys. We see other sailor-style hats worn with Fauntrleroy suits. There were a wide variety of styles. There were two major stylistic elements, the crown and the brim. We note both rounded and flat crowns. We also notice hats with widely varied brim widths. There were other variables, including the hat band, streamers, and chin straps. There were different colors. Many of these hats were straw hats, but I don't think tht they all ere. We do not notice many other hat styles worn with Fauntleroy suits. Many of the hats we notice were straw hats, but we do notice some other materials. Some of these hats are quite large. Thus in many portraits, the boys are not actually wearing them.

Folded-up Brim Soft Hats

This is a hat style that was quite popular diring the late-19th century. We are not sure, however, just what to call it. It os a soft cap and in contrast to the wide-brimmed sailor hat, the brim was folded up, rather like a navy swabie cap. The soft rounded crown extended up over the folded up brim. It was usually a dark cap, but we are not sure about the color. Also unlike the broad brimmed sailor cap, it was not a little boy hat style. We see many school-age boys wearing them with all kinds of suits. We are not sure about the chronology of these hats. We certainly see them in the 1880s. We are not yet sure about the 1870s. They were soft cloth caps, but I think a similar headwear style was sone in fur.

Fur Hats

Adult-styled Hats

Some boys wore adult-styled hats, but not usually with Fauntleroy suits.
